I look white, I identify myself as black,” says filmmaker Kathe Sandler. “I made this film because I wanted to understand something that had a very dominant influence in my life.” In this documentary, Sandler digs into the often subconscious world of colorism, a caste system within the African-American community that deems the lightest skin tones to be the most beautiful and socially acceptable. Tackling a painful and taboo subject with great sensitivity, the film helps viewers understand the complex interplay between racial identity, culture, and self-image. (58 minutes)

Ironically, it was the notion of political liberty and the natural rights of man that led to the ideology of white supremacy. Ancient peoples stigmatized others on the basis of language, class, and religion, but they did not sort people into races. As the Founding Fathers grappled with the hypocrisy of slavery in the new democracy, Thomas Jefferson was among the first to discuss “the natural inferiority of Africans”—a convenient justification for social inequality, and the same type of thinking that rationalized the seizing of Native American lands. But differences in economic status eventually led to divisive positions on issues such as affirmative action in education, Louis Farrakhan’s philosophies, and even a perceived “Jewish influence” in Hollywood. In this program, scholars and critics probe the history and psychology of the social marginalization shared by blacks and Jews. Key conflicts, such as New York’s Crown Heights riots and the “blockbusting” in Chicago that pitted Jewish homeowners against black home buyers, are examined from the perspectives of activists on both sides. Banished

Between 1860 and 1920, hundreds of U.S. counties expelled their African-American residents. The pattern was horrifically similar in almost all cases: a black man was accused of assaulting a white woman, was lynched, and then white rioters attacked black neighborhoods with guns and firebombs. After blacks fled for their lives, whites illegally assumed ownership of the abandoned property. This program places these events in the context of present-day race relations by visiting towns in Georgia, Missouri, and Arkansas where banishments took place. As black and white citizens warily explore the idea of reparations and reconciliation, the film reveals that even one hundred years later these communities tend to uphold the legacy of racial segregation. July ‘64

The night of July 24th, 1964 started off normally enough in Rochester, New York, but by the next morning no one would look at race relations in the North the same way again. This program takes a penetrating look at the underlying causes of the urban insurrections that swept through African-American communities in the 1960s, beginning with the 1964 Rochester race riot. Interviews with several participants reveal regret mixed with a continued frustrated about the discriminatory practices and poor living conditions that led to the civil unrest. (54 minutes)

Australia: Tracking the Intervention

Shocked at the extent of child abuse in Aboriginal communities, the Australian government in 2007 declared the situation a national emergency and ordered the military to intervene. Control was seized of 73 communities that had been under indigenous rule, bans on alcohol and pornography put in place, and a complex system of welfare payments was instituted that sometimes left recipients without funds—and with their self-esteem in tatters. This program investigates the Australian government’s controversial—some say racist—intervention in the Northern Territory’s Aboriginal communities, considering whether cultural factors have doomed the action to failure. Like the crocodiles that carpet their country’s riverbanks, some South Africans have never evolved beyond a primitive state that links survival with fear. Their homes are equipped with electric fences and hired security crews for the purpose of keeping out intruders—who would, of course, be black. This program explores the persistence of racist attitudes among white South Africans and also takes a heartening look at those who have overcome their prejudice. “How do you teach a child in South Africa not to be afraid?” asks Johannes, a retired white pastor who works closely with a black congregation. “It has been so emphasized in our history.” Some language may be offensive. Sister Rose's Passion

Until the Second Vatican Council in 1965, textbooks used to educate Catholic children taught that Jews were responsible for the death of Christ and hence were hated by God. The amendment at Vatican II was thanks to Sister Rose Thering, who had been troubled by the Church’s anti-Semitic stance as a child, and appalled by the lack of response to the Holocaust as an adult. In this program, Sister Rose describes her crusade to strike inaccurate and inflammatory language about Jews from the Catholic canon. Historians and members of the clergy shed light on the theological roots of anti-Semitism, and also comment on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, which was condemned by the U.S. Conference of Bishops. In this program, Bill Moyers returns to his hometown of Marshall, Texas-discovering, in his words, "a new town perched on the memory of one that's gone." Today it is hoped and expected that all of Marshall's citizens, regardless of racial background, share the responsibilities of living and working in a small town. But there was a time in recent history when the opposite was assumed and accepted, when there were two Marshalls-one black, one white. IQ: A History of Deceit

What we now call an IQ test was originally developed by Alfred Binet at the start of the 20th century as a way to measure developmental delays in schoolchildren. But with the eugenics craze at its peak, Binet’s concept was soon appropriated and exploited by those who wished to guarantee the ethnic purity of their society. This program looks at the history of IQ assessment, from Ellis Island evaluations to William Shockley’s racist declarations in the 1970s, and reveals how social policies were influenced by the idea that intelligence is set at birth. Indian School: Stories of Survival

Proposing to “kill the Indian and save the man,” U.S. Army captain Richard H. Pratt envisioned an educational system that would erase Native American culture and “civilize” the continent’s indigenous people. His chosen method? Removing children from Pennsylvania’s tribal communities and confining them in barracks-style schools—initially the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which Pratt founded in 1879. In myopic terms it was a remarkably effective strategy, and Carlisle became a cruel model for institutions all over the U.S. and Canada, including Michigan’s Mount Pleasant Indian School. Subjected to emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse, Mount Pleasant students were inevitably alienated from their families, native languages, and tribal religions. This film combines archival materials with present-day interviews to make clear just how inhumane the system was. Survivors from Tlingit, Chippewa, Choctaw, and Lakota communities describe in raw, unflinching terms the impact on First Nations across North America. Contains occasional profanity. (41 minutes)

In the spring of 1964, the civil rights community is gearing up for “Mississippi Freedom Summer,” during which hundreds, if not thousands, of mostly white student activists from the North will link up with mostly black freedom workers to accomplish what the Mississippi power structure fears the most: registering black people to vote. For the segregationists, Freedom Summer is nothing less than a declaration of war. The state responds by swearing in hundreds of new deputies, stockpiling tear gas and riot gear, and preparing the jails for an influx of summer “guests.” But the most powerful men in the state have another weapon to fight integration. They have quietly created a secret, state-funded spy agency, the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, answering directly to the Governor. During the height of the civil rights movement, sovereignty commission operatives employed a cadre of black operatives who infiltrated the movement, rooting out its future plans, identifying its leaders, and tripping up its foot soldiers. By gaining the trust of civil rights crusaders, they gathered crucial intelligence on behalf of the segregationist state.

Following the brothers from the night of their intake to their eventual placement in separate residential facilities, this video illustrates with unflinching clarity and detail the procedural challenges that many juvenile defendants face when they are incarcerated. The legal, sociological, and psychological aspects of the case are further examined through one-on-one interviews with the older brother, his sister and mother, the presiding judge, the defending and prosecuting attorneys, the boys' probation officer, and their court-appointed therapist. The prosecutors relied on eyewitness testimony to convict him. In New Orleans, another man sits in prison convicted of murdering his best friend during a botched armed robbery in 1985. There was no physical evidence tying the suspect to the scene, but two eyewitnesses picked the suspect out of a six-pack photo lineup – a practice that has now been discredited. A convicted murderer is sentenced to life in prison based solely on eyewitness identification, a source of evidence proven to be unreliable.
